Training video on chord symbols

December 6, 2012 By Peter Thompson

What’s the difference between a C2, C add2, and a C9 chord?  If you said, “Trick question, there’s no difference,” then you need to watch the latest OWS training video on interpreting and writing chord symbols.  I’m not saying that my way of writing chord symbols is definitive, but…well, that might be what I’m saying!

Even if you know all the subtleties of sus4, half-diminished, and 13 chords, I bet your bandmates don’t, so get your team together and have a ten-minute viewing party.  Now, some of the concepts covered in those ten minutes are concepts that a fair number of university music majors don’t fully get.  So if I rushed through something, don’t be embarrassed to let me know.  Enjoy!

P.S. After you hit play, you may want to click the speech bubble on the video toolbar. That will enable annotations with pop-up links to other related concepts.
