Worship keyboard: playing melodically

Playing with a chord chart in front of you doesn’t mean you’re limited to playing chords. Adding melodic ideas to the chord structure adds a lot of interest and beauty to worship music. In this video tutorial, I demonstrate some steps to bridge the gap between playing just chords to playing melodically.

Anyone applying these techniques will want to take care not to overdo it. Be sensitive to when other musicians are playing melodically, in order to avoid conflicts. Also, allow some musical spaces to go unfilled. “Busy” music can be distracting in worship.

That said, I hope these tips will assist you in taking your keyboard/piano playing to the next level. And let me know if there’s anything I can do to serve your worship sound!

(The song I use in this training is “No Other Name But Jesus.” You can download free music charts on the Extras page.)
