expressive piano playing

Expressive piano playing: volume

expressive piano playing

Playing music with an expressive approach can be difficult to grasp.  How do we put emotion and feeling into our playing?

I would suggest there are two roads toward more expressive playing: tempo and volume. In the video below, I talk about the latter: how you can use changes in volume to communicate expression.

Expressive playing through volume

In the video, I talk about developing a lighter touch – not being heavy-handed on piano.  A lighter touch allows you to develop the mellow sounds of the piano to give contrast to your louder playing.

We also talk about how, if you’re playing through a sound system, you need to develop trust with your sound tech in order to make this happen.

Finally, we talk about varying note volumes within phrases to create expression and interest.

Increase your expressive range with better technique

The more technique you have on an instrument, the more expressive you can play.  Check out the Fluent Piano video courses (Chords and Melodic), which are also available though OurWorshipSound All Access.
