FP Background Base Techniques

Fundamental techniques for background playing

Startup sequence / fading in

Your goal is to provide as smooth and unnoticeable transition into the music as possible.  Here is the 5-step process I use. I demonstrate without speaking in the second video.

Changing the harmonic rhythm

Sometimes the song you’re leading into has chords that change to quickly for good background playing. Here is how you can adapt using the same chords.

Sparse technique

Playing just once per chord change requires patience, but it’s a great technique, even with basic voicings.

1st and 5th scale notes only

In this session, we’ll play only the 1st and 5th scale notes in the right hand while allowing the left hand to outline the chord changes. This base technique creates good continuity in your progression, among other advantages.

The summary video for all techniques can be found at the conclusion of the Advanced Techniques module.
